Noted Detroit criminal defense attorney W. Otis Culpepper is in trouble with the IRS again.
Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press reports that Culpepper, who once represented members of the notorious drug gang, Young Boys Inc., was sentenced in 1988 by U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn to one year in prison -- he got three concurrent one-year sentences -- for income tax evasion.
Court filings say he owes more than $192,000 in income taxes, penalties and interest, the Freep reports:
His latest troubles, however, do not involve any criminal charges. The federal government instead filed a civil complaint against Culpepper, asking the courts to issue a judgment against the embattled attorney in the amount of $192,305.11. That's how much it claims he owes in income taxes from 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
