Accountant Has 2 Full-time Jobs; Manages Oak Park's and Novi's Finances

November 24, 2015, 7:03 AM

It's kind of hard to believe the city of Oak Park couldn't find another full-time accountant to watch over its finances, someone who doesn't already have a full-time job.

But here's the story, according Daniel Bethencourt of the Detroit Free Press.

The Freep reports that accountant Carl Johnson Jr. manages the finances for the city of Novi and Oak Park and earns a combine salary of $200,000.

They're both full-time jobs.

The Freep reports that he's been managing finances for the City of Novi for almost two years. Then about four months ago, the city of Oak Park hired him.

In Novi, he earns $115,000, plus $4,800 in automobile allowance. In Oak Park, he earns $90,000.

“I work 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. five nights a week,” Johnson tells the Freep. “There is no story.”

His bosses are fine with the arrangement, the Freep writes.

"I’m 110% comfortable with our arrangement,” Oak Park City Manager Erik Tungate tells the Freep. “His expertise level is unprecedented.”

“If I had a pot of good qualified exceptional people to choose from, would I pick this arrangement? Probably not,” he said. “At the same time, Carl is a very very qualified person, and one of the best municipal finance people around.”
