Thirty-three homes are slated for demolition in the next few weeks in the Delray neighborhood, which the city describes as "one of Detroit’s proudest but most challenged neighborhoods."

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Council member Raquel Castañeda-López made the announcement on Tuesday, saying they hope it helps boost the neighborhood.

The Delray project is being paid for with $750,000 the City Council allotted to the community from the state of Michigan from part of its land acquisition for the planned Gordie Howe International Bridge Project, the city said.

The city also plans to remove a significant amount of “non-structural” blight, including overgrown brush and scrub trees on existing vacant land.

“The City Council worked hard to make sure these dollars were reinvested in Delray to address quality of life issues and continue our commitment to community benefits,” said Council member Castañeda-López in a statement. “I look forward to a continued partnership with residents and the Mayor to create a healthy community in which residents and industry co-exist in Delray.”
