With the launching of M-1 Rail scheduled for early next year, authorities are still hammering out some details including the cost of a transfer from a bus and a universal pass, be it on a plastic card or smart phone,  that could be used for the rail, buses and People Mover.

Dan Lijana, a communications officer for the transit system, says:

  • General fare for a ride is expected to be $1.50, but cheaper if you buy in bulk
  • Hours are  tentatively set for Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Trains will run longer during events such as baseball, football, hockey games, concerts and festivals, though he said it's not clear yet how much later they will run after the events.
  • There will be 12 stops, collectively, along the north-south route that runs 3.3 miles. It's not clear yet how much shelter will be provided for the cold winter months. There will be an emergency phone and closed circuit security systems at all of the stations.
  • The top speed will be 35 m.p.h.
  • Cars will share lanes with trains.
  • For events that close Woodward Avenue at Campus Martius Park, the streetcar will turn around near the Campus Martius station and not go to the Congress/Larned station. Likewise, for any special event south of I-75 (Comerica Park/Ford Field/Fox Theatre), the streetcar service will end at the Sibley station and then turn around.
