Southfield-Based Bagger Dave's Has Had Better Days

Bagger Dave's in downtown Detroit

Things were looking very promising for Southfield-based Bagger Daves Burger Tavern, opening new outlets including one in downtown Detroit.

But Gary Anglebrandt of Crain's Detroit Business reports that the past year has not looked so rosy.

He writes that the chain had two rounds of closings in 2015: The first came in August when the parent company Diversified Restaurant Holdings Inc.closed three locations in Indiana. In December, eight more spots closed including one in downtown Detroit, near Greektown, that was open for only two years.

Crain's writes that one of the Indiana restaurants didn't last 10 months and two more barely made it to the one-year mark.

Crain's writes:

This is a marked about-face for a company normally hell-bent on growth. It opened six Bagger Dave's in 2014 and seven in 2013. And that pales to its Buffalo Wild Wings franchise operations, the largest in the country. Last year alone, Diversified added 20 more restaurants, 18 of which came from the $54 million purchase of Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants in the St. Louis area. That brought the number of Buffalo Wild Wings locations under its umbrella to 62.
