No one has it over on the D when it comes to hair stylists.

WDET reports:

Since the 1980s, Detroit stylists have designed larger than life hair creations to be shown off at the city’s annual Hair Wars event. Behind these extravagant formations of shapes and colors is a local industry of highly skilled barbers and stylists. Through hair they have personified Detroit’s culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity.

Audio storyteller Shannon Cason and photographer Justin Milhouse tell that story in an exhibit called “Hair Capital of the World." It debuts Thursday from 7-10 p.m. at  the Artist Village Detroit at 17405 Lahser Rd. in Detroit, near the Redford Theater, and runs through April 23.

The project is part of "Framed by WDET," an audio-visual series produced by the public radio station at 101.9 FM.
