A Michigan father died in Florida Saturday while saving his daughter from rough waters in Jacksonville Beach in northern Florida, the New York Daily News reports.

Bill Moritz, 28, who lives in Plymouth, according to his Facebook page, was in Florida for his father’s memorial service. His parent died two weeks ago and the service was to be held at the beach where the tragedy happened.

On Saturday, shortly before 11 a.m., Moritz dived into the surf to save his 6-year-old daughter Madeleine, who was pulled in by strong waves, the newspaper sayss. After the heroic act, he drowned, the paper reports, but the circumstances surrounding that are unclear.

GoFundMe page has been set up to pay for funeral and expenses. It says:

William (Bill) Moritz lost his life on April 16th by doing what any great father would do.  A tide pulled Maddy into the ocean and he dived in to get her out, as a result of saving Maddy's life he ultimately lost his.

We are trying to help the family with the funeral and the many other expenses of getting Bill back home.  Also to help Maddy with what ever she may need. We know many of you have been asking how you can help, this would be the best way to help the family at this time.  Any amount would be grateful and welcomed.

On behalf of Magan, Maddy and the rest of Bill's family, we thank you.
