A Chat With Emily 'Say Nice Things About Detroit' Gail

June 09, 2016, 7:37 AM

Emily Gail was best known for being a Detroit booster and her slogan "Say Nice Things About Detroit." She opened a little retail shop on Congress in downtown Detroit in the 1970s and sold apparel with that slogan, and organized runs that grew to 20,000 in the mid-1980s, WXYZ reports.

Thirty years ago, she moved to Hawaii, where she has been ever since. She has  promoted triathlons there, sold real estate and hosted a radio show for ESPN Hawaii.

WXYZ's Dave LewAllen chatted with Gail who was strolling down Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit. She says she visits her hometown regularly.

"This is where my heart is and I've known that for 30 years," Gail tells WXYZ.

"Sure there's lots of things that are being worked on (and) need to be worked on," Gail said of Detroit. "But how can you not walk around and feel pride."
