The Highers brothers, who were granted a new trial last month after serving 25 years behind bars for a murder conviction, went  free on bond last night, greeted by family members, friends, their legal team and members of the media.

Jim Schaefer of the Detroit Free Press reports that Wayne County Circuit Judge Lawrence Talon of Detroit ruled yesterday that Raymond and Thomas Highers can go free for now, but must wear a tether.

Talon concluded last month that new witnesses revealed information that raised doubts about the brothers' guilt.

"It's kind of overwhelming, but it's a great day," Raymond Highers told reporters. "Thank God for this day."
