A former Ferndale cop faces charges of assault and battery for allegedly using excessive force on April 18 while arresting a 17-year-old suspect from Detroit for stealing from vehicles, The Detroit News reports.

Jason White, 37, a nine-year veteran of the department, was charged following an investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, writes Mike Martindale. The arrested suspect had complained that he was assaulted and investigators were able to review a video of the incident from a patrol camera.

White resigned in May after the probe began into the incident.

The suspect and an accomplice were leaving the Ferndale neighborhood with items stolen from cars when they were arrested, The News reports.

Police Chief Timothy Collins said it was the man's fifth arrest for similar activity. All five arrests were made by White.

"It’s a sad event for the department, and White and his family,” Collins said, according to the News. “As bad as it is, and as deplorable as his actions, it was properly reported by other officers and up the chain of command.”
