It's illegal to ride a bicycle across the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Bicyclists are also banned from getting on the Transit Windsor tunnel bus with their bikes.

But bicyclist Kyle Colasanti, 24, of Windsor, really wanted to get to the Steely Dan concert at the DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston last month. He paid $200 for the ticket.

The Windsor Star tells his interesting tale Thursday evening.

The diehard fan on June 8 proceeded to the tunnel entrance, paid the toll at an unattended lane and then pedaled on after the gate rose. “It was a little nerve-wracking, but I knew what I was doing — I’m not going to miss this concert,”  Colasanti tells reporter Doug Schmidt.

On the U.S. side, three U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers hustled the young Windsor cyclist into a two-hour series of interviews and questions after a search, the paper says. He made it to the concert late and was told to find an alternative way home.

The paper reports:

“The three border patrollers were really nice, there were no shotguns, they just asked: ‘What are you doing?'” said the 24-year-old Windsor musician and busker. The U.S. Customs officers were “surprisingly polite,” with some of the other border officers listening in “thinking it was really funny,” Colasanti recalls of the June 8 episode.

Bicycle advocates say the story highlights a transportation need of cyclists. The planned Gordie Howe International Bridge will include a cycling option.
