Macomb County Woman Dies from Bacterial Meningitis

A Shelby Township woman died after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis this week, The Macomb Daily reports.

The county health department confirms the death of Kristy Malter, 21 a Central Michigan University student who graduated from Pontiac Notre Dame Prep High School.

She had been working at a day camp at the Lifetime Fitness gym in Rochester Hills and was admitted to the hospital this week. An obituary lists Thursday as the day of death. 

Meningococcal disease is a severe bacterial infection of the bloodstream or meninges (a thin lining covering the brain and spinal cord) caused by the meningococcus germ.

The funeral home obituary:

Beloved daughter of Tim and Donna. Loving sister of Erin (Joe) Bianchini and Tim. Dear granddaughter of Gene and Irene Mustage and Frank and Joan Malter.

Kristy will also be missed by many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. She was currently a senior at Central Michigan University and member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Prior to CMU she attended Notre Dame Prep and St. Lawrence School. Kristy was a friendly, caring, compassionate person who loved helping others especially children.

Visitation Tuesday 2-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Scripture Service at the Wm Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Road (3 Blks E. of Van Dyke) Utica. Funeral Mass Wednesday 9:30 a.m. instate ,10 a.m. Mass at St. Lawrence Catholic Church 44633 Utica Road, Utica.
