'Detroit Is Cheaper and Way More Chill' Than Portland, Denver -- MoPop Visitor

July 25, 2016, 11:10 AM by  Alan Stamm

Among the sweating, sweltering music fans who jammed this weekend's two-day MoPop Festival at West Riverfront Park is a Denver visitor who shares a city hug at Reddit.

She tosses out effusive shouts for friendly people, a diverse audience, yummy food truck fare, a BBQ restaurant in Corktown (yup, that one) and a region that "seems special."

The unnamed admirer, posting as "RusselsCrockpot," signs her first entry this way: "Love from a CO girl." A backstage catering reference suggests she's a performer or came with a band.

Here's her love letter, combined from three items in a r/Detroit thread she titles "You have a beautiful city with beautiful people:"

I've been in town for a few days for MoPop! Wow was it hot.

But let me say that after working at and attending numerous festivals of all sorts, Detroit hands down put on a great show today [Saturday] on their riverfront.

And everyone here is so friendly. I'm so happy your city is turning around.

I've met so many cool people of all classes and races, and every conversation I've had with random people, I get the sense they are truly interested in asking [questions] and not just "giving pleasantries" [like] I notice in other cities.

And your food --  wow! Slows BBQ!!!! They catered on of our back areas along with the Mac 'n Cheese Truck  [Mac Shack].

What I've seen in your city and state [including Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti side trips] seems special.

I didn't feel any tensions between races. Muslims seemed comfortable and no one was staring. Groups of mixed ethnic groups [were] playing Pokemon or hanging at our festival.

It's been an amazing experience and I will be telling friends to skip Portland and Denver for food and fun. Detroit is cheaper and way more chill.

The post earns more than 100 "upvotes" in less than a day. A local Redditor comments:

Glad you had a great time and learned what most of us already know! Spread the word!
