Southfield-based Lear Corp., which manufactures auto supplies, may transfer thousands of jobs from Mexico to Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The possible move is  "a work in progress," columnist Susan Tompor writes.

She quotes a senior vice president, Mel Stephens, as saying:

"We're completely committed to studying it to try to do it. . . . Anything within the city is a possible site."

Conrad L. Mallett Jr., chief administrative officer for the Detroit Medical Center, who sits on the board of Lear, tells the Freep that discussions are under way with  Mayor Mike Duggan, Gov. Rick Snyder and the United Auto Workers.

Lear is one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive seating and electrical distribution systems and has has 140,000 employees in 36 countries, the paper says.
