Huntington Bank Will Open 80 New Branches in Michigan

Huntington National Bank plans to open more than 80 branches inside Meijer Inc. stores across the state in the coming years.

Huntington said it will open 22 branches in 2012, six in metro Detroit. Eventually more than 500 jobs will be created, about half in Southeast Michigan..

Most of the 80-some branches, which will be open for extended hours seven days a week, are expected to be open by 2016, although a few may not open until as late as 2019.

According to Crain's Detroit Business, with the new Meijer branches and previous acquisitions,  Huntington will jump in the rankings both in metro Detroit and statewide. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., as of last June 30, Huntington was ninth in the Detroit area with 52 branches and eighth in the state with 129.

Fifty-five more in Detroit would boost Huntington to No. 5 in the area, and 95 more in Michigan would boost it to No. 4 in the state. Chase Bank is No. 1 in the state with 306 branches and in Southeastern Michigan with 176.
