The disturbing thing is what The Detroit News investigation uncovered: Years of doctor complaints at the Detroit Medical Center about dirty, broken and missing surgical instruments.

The upside is that the state of Michigan announced on Thursday, the day the story was published, that it was launching an investigation into the DMC.

“Based on The Detroit News story, our bureau has initiated an investigation into issues related to the sterilization of surgical equipment at DMC facilities,” Larry Horvath, director of the Michigan Bureau of Community Health Systems, said in a statement, according to the the reporters, who conducted the investigation.

The state probe is good news for patients who may have been put at risk while the problem flew under the radar for years.

The News investigation is also a heartening sign at a time when newsrooms continue to shrink that investigative journalism in Detroit is still alive and can make a difference in peoples' lives.
