Why Detroit? A Writer Tweets the Reasons He's Glad to Be Back

September 12, 2016, 2:05 PM by  Alan Stamm

Journalist Ron Fournier often mixes his personal and professional sides on social media. (Who doesn't, right?)

He's a native of this city who came back last week to stay, Fournier hired on as associate publisher of Crain's Detroit Business, which is about to host the third Detroit Homecoming for professionals who've moved away -- an ideal time to promote Detroit's allure.

Ron Fournier: "That's bacon on a stick."

“There is a feeling of hope in this city," Mayor Mike Duggan said last month at a media preview for the Sept. 14-16 event. "This is a way to find your way back home.”

Fournier shares Week One vignettes in an intermittent series of tweets (about 15 in four days, so far) tagged #WhyDetroit? It's partly a way to answer a recurring question from followers surprised or skeptical about his choice of where to move from Arlington, Va., near the capital.

The east-sider left in 1985 for a career that included serving as Washington bureau chief for the Associated Press from 2008-10. Now, at 53, he's living out lyrics by Tom Petty, another ageless creative force:

Yeah, runnin' down a dream . . .
Goin' wherever it leads . . .
There's something good waitin' down this road

Fournier's illustrated tweets share family, cultural, athletic and street life reasons he's glad to be home.

He invites us all to make this a thing, tweeting Sunday to this writer: "I'm hoping you and other join the celebration." Early signs of traction emerge:

We accept the challenge and start what will be occasional contributions. We'll also retweet  those from others.
