A Californian's Love Letter to Detroit, Which 'Will Have Me Visiting Again'

October 25, 2016, 5:22 PM

"The food, craft beer and sports culture will have me visiting again," posts a traveler from Oakland, Calif., with his panorama.

Even though visitors' e-hugs are a semi-regular thing now, it's still cool to hear tourists say nice things about Detroit.

The latest "love letter" is at the Reddit Detroit forum with this iPhone panorama from the Greektown Casino Hotel, snapped on a bright Sunday morning by a California traveler who asks to be identified only as Ramon. ("My Reddit account is mostly clean, but I still wouldn't want an employer to find it.")

Below is most of what he says Monday night under the heading "Enjoyed my time in your city as a tourist." The post earns 100 upvotes in less than a day.

Just stopping by to pay respect to the city from a tourist's perspective. As someone who has seen a city (Oakland, CA) with a terrible reputation really turn itself around over the course of my lifetime, the similarities between the two cities are hard to miss.

Of course there are pockets of neighborhoods that should be avoided, but only the ignorant use that to represent a city as a whole. This is probably nothing profound, but I feel it's worth repeating.

I went on a 13-mile training run through the city on Saturday before sunrise. I turned around when things clearly got sketchy, but the majority of the run felt safe and was nice to look at.

The food, craft beer and sports culture will have me visiting again. I say that even after the verbal abuse I received after the Wings game in my Sharks jersey. . . . Hopefully this positive trend becomes the norm. Thanks Detroit.
