Video: A Chat With the Owner of the Wildly Popular Supino Pizzeria In Eastern Market

A few years ago, while actress Chrisinta Hendricks was in Detroit filming a Ryan Gosling movie, she told Esquire magazine:

"I think I might have had the best pizza I've ever had in my life the other day at Supino. It kind of blew my mind. This is a pretty bold statement 'cause I've had many pizzas in my day, but I think this is the best I've ever had. And my husband was like, 'I think you're right. I think this is the best pizza.' And he used to work at pizza places, so he's like Mr. Pizza. It was amazing."

She's not alone. Some days the line at Supino Pizzeria at 2457 Russell St. in Detroit's Eastern Market is out the door. During the Christmas season, people have been known to wait two hours at lunch time for a carry out for an office feast.

In a town that has its fair share of high quality pizza, Supino ranks up there, serving flat, New York-style pie that takes no back seat to the Big Apple.

It's been open eight years now, and is going strong. In January, owner Dave Mancini opened La Rondinella, an Italian restaurant right next door. In June, Detroit Free Press food writer Mark Kurlyandchik wrote a restaurant review:

Supino Pizzeria impresario Dave Mancini's new Eastern Market Italian joint punches well above its weight class, offering thoughtful Northern Italian-style fare for Olive Garden prices.

Deadline Detroit's Allan Lengel stopped by Supino right before the start of the weekend to chat with Mancini while he was preparing pizza dough.
