A 44-year-old drug and alcohol counselor who was headed home from work early Friday morning was shot and killed near his home in northwest Detroit, Fox 2 reports.

The incident happened shortly after midnight.

Tony Taylor Jr., a father of five children, was shot in chest close to his home in the 17000 block of Huntington, which is near West McNichols Road and Outer Drive. A witness told police they saw a man about 5 feet 9 inches tall running from the scene, Robin Murdoch reports.

Taylor's family tells Fox 2 that Tony was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time, and that she heard the shots.

"He was a good man, good man. I just can't believe this is happening," the victim's mother, Marchelle Taylor, tells the station. He was studying to be a pastor, the family says.
