@JohnDingell, World's Best 90-Year-Old Tweeter: 'Trump Loses, Constitution Wins'

February 10, 2017, 4:16 PM by  Alan Stamm

"There’s one tweeter who has best demonstrated the character and the 140 characters necessary to" deliver Democratic responses to President Trump, says a Friday tribute to John Dingell in America's largest-circulation newspaper.

"The best way to stop an unstable 70-year-old with an itchy Twitter finger is the world’s greatest 90-year-old Twitter user," Jason Sattler of USA Today writes of Dearborn's retired congressman (1955-2015).

His latest shot came last Thursday after a federal appeals court ruled 3-0 against reinstating presidential immigration restrictions:

In addition to a stiletto-sharp wit, Dingell is well-positioned as one of the president's social media foils for these reasons, Sattler suggests:

Dingell doesn’t ever have to worry about ever getting a job again. This gives him a freedom to swing back at Trump’s wild accusations, proclamations and ejaculations.

Plus, he — like the president — seems to have a fair amount of spare time.

"John Dingell unfiltered is a little dangerous," says Rep. Debbie Dingell, who snapped this shot of her husband Jan. 23.

The active, amusing tweeter in western Wayne County has nearly 91,000 followers. He identifies himself there as "@RepDebbieDingell's husband" and a "fan of @umich and all things Detroit."

The 63-year-old congresswoman, who holds her spouse's former U.S. House seat, shares a Facebook link to the new article and comments: "John Dingell is wise and I am proud of his ability to always tell the truth with the Dingell sparkle."

In a joint interview at their home, she tells the reporter:

"John Dingell unfiltered is a little dangerous. We encourage him to run [his thoughts] by us before they get posted.”

"And I usually do," says the retiree, who calls Trump “a bully and a blowhard and a liar" during the interview.

“He is the president of all Americans. It is his duty to look to the well-being of all parts of the county. We’ve not yet seen whether he is doing that, whether he intends to do that or whether he will do that. . . .

"[Presidents] have a responsibility to preserve the dignity of the office. I don’t see him doing that so far.” . . .

“He is a man who has two problems that work against each other. One is ego. He has a gigantic ego. And he has a gigantic inferiority complex," Dingell told me. “And he’s playing into the hands of his enemies.

"But he’s also playing into the hands of our enemies in the nation, which is why people in that kind of office are so careful about what they say. And he’s not. And all of these things are going to come back.”

Here are recent shots fired by the best tweeter aged 90 or older -- or perhaps in any age group:
