Hazel Park Superintendent Defends School After Refs Abruptly End Basketball Game

Hazel Park Superintendent Dr. Amy Kruppe is defending the school after referees ended a basketball game last Thursday at Hazel Park High School with 1:13 on the clock because of fan behavior and unsafe conditions, The Oakland Press reports.

At least one fan threw a plastic bottle on the court, and a fan and players got into a confrontation with refs during the game against North Farmington, which was ahead 75-58.

Amy Kruppe reviewed surveillance tape from the gym and spoke with school officials Friday night, she tells reporter Jason Schmitt. The video, parts of which were seen by The Oakland Press, shows one official being confronted by a fan before shoving that fan. This apparently led to the official being confronted by the Hazel Park players and coaches.

“(From the video) I could see the whole thing,” Kruppe says in a phone interview. “The video shows an adult and a referee having words and that official pushing the adult. It had nothing to do with our Hazel Park students. The MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) official put his hands on someone first. He shoved the parent first and the parent stepped away. The MHSAA official was the aggressor."

“Somebody’s trying to make Hazel Park look bad, the school look bad. This is not a Hazel Park issue.”
