State Sen. Coleman Young II, son of the legendary ex-Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young, plans to run for mayor in 2017 against Mike Duggan.

The announcement Sunday on WHPR Radio provides fodder for local political pundits. They'll compare the son to the father, Detroit's first black mayor from 1973-93. There hadn't been a white mayor since then, until Duggan won in 2013.

It will an uphill battle to topple Duggan, a popular incumbent backed by many neighborhood groups and even his 2013 opponent, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon.

Coleman A. Young was considered bright and politically adept and wasn't afraid to be combative. The word has it that his son, who changed his name from Joel Loving, pales in comparison.

Young died Nov. 29, 1997 at age 79.

The son, now 34, was first elected to the state House in 2006. He went on to become a state senator.
