Duggan, Gilbert Want State Lawmakers to Focus on Slashing Auto Insurance Rates

Auto insurance rates are high in Michigan and outrageous in the city of Detroit. A person with a good driving record in the city can easily pay between $3,000 to $5,000 a year.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, in his State of the City address Tuesday night, urged the Republican-controlled state House to abandon an income tax cut and instead focus on policies that would slash the high cost of Michigan vehicle insurance, Chad Livengood writes at Crain's Detroit Business.

Lawmakers could vote as early as Wednesday to gradually reduce the 4.25 percent individual income tax to 3.9 percent over four years.

Lowering the income tax rate will save workers “a couple hundred bucks,” Duggan says. “If you solve the car insurance, you’ll put three or four times that back in people’s pockets and you won’t hurt any state services.”
