Ron Savage, Jan. 30, 1954 -- Feb. 25, 2017

Arrangements are announced Sunday, a day after the 63-year-old newsman died while training with the Milford Fire Department in western Oakland County, where he was a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician.

Savage, a Milford resident, is survived by his wife Mitzi; his teen son Ronald Jr.; sisters Pat Murphy of Lansing and Elizabeth Savage; brothers Tom and Dave; and nieces and nephews.

A family obituary describes him as "funny, loud and extremely caring."

Visitation is Wednesday from 1-9 p.m. at Lynch & Sons funeral home, 404 E. Liberty St. in Milford.

Another visitation the next day from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church precedes a 4 p.m. funeral mass. The Milford church is at 1955 E. Commerce St.

Memorial gifts may be made to The Ronnie Savage College Education Fund, 1569 Boulder Lake Drive, Milford, MI 48380.

Tributes can be posted on this funeral home page. His family-written obituary is here. Excerpts:

Ron Savage was more than a friendly face that you'd see on TV. He was also dedicated to helping the people of Milford. . . . He was a decorated firefighter who earned two citations for outstanding performance above and beyond the call of duty . . .

He also volunteered with Crime Stoppers, the Humane Society, the Autism Society of Michigan, MADD and the American Lung Association.

Ron was funny, loud and extremely caring. . . . A big camping enthusiast in both the Upper and Lower Peninsula, his favorite hobby was cooking, in mass quantities, and specializing in BBQ smoked ribs -- "low and slow," as he liked to say.
