A 31-year-old man wanted on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct died in a shootout Thursday afternoon in Warren with the U.S. Marshals' Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team.

The fugitive team, run by the U.S. Marshals Office in Detroit, is comprised of deputy U.S. Marshals and deputized marshals from other law enforcement agencies.

The Michigan State Police is the lead agency investigating the shooting, Detroit U.S. Marshal Robert Grubbs tells Deadline Detroit. The Marshals Service will also conduct an internal review. Grubbs declined to say who on the task force shot the man or what department the officer or officers are from.

The fugitive squad tracked the 31-year-old man to an apartment complex around 1 p.m., WXYZ reports. The man walked out of the apartment and crossed the street.

Task force identified themselves and tried to make an arrest, but a shootout began. No law enforcers were hurt.
