Update: Comic Dave Chappelle Was Wasted on Weed at Lousy Detroit Show, He Admits

March 22, 2017, 3:14 PM

Update, 3:10 p.m.: Hey, many of us have been there -- though likely not on stage in front of hundreds of paying customers. Dave Chappelle wasn't drunk when he slurred his speech during a stand up performance at the Fillmore Detroit two years ago, he says now.

He was very high on weed, MLive reports.

In the first part of his new stand-up comedy special on Netflix, Chappelle explains:

"If you saw it, I wasn't drunk. I had smoked some reefer with some rappers. I don't know if you know anything about hanging out with rappers, but their weed is very strong. Stronger than I was accustomed to."

Original post, Wednesday morning:

In April 2015, Dave Chappelle was booed at The Fillmore Detroit downtown. People complained he slurred words and was generally terrible. The next year, in February 2016, he was supposed to attend a fundraiser for the Flint water crisis, but missed it.

In his first stand up special in more than 10 years, the comic appears on Netflix and addresses those issues, Ken Haddad of WDIV reports.

Referring to the Fillmore appearance, Chappelle says: "I'm like Evel Knievel, I get paid for the attempt."

He also addressed missing the charity event for the Flint water crisis.

He said at the last minute, fellow comedian Chris Rock got him a ticket to the Oscars and he couldn't pass it up.

"What was I going to do with the water? I'm not a superhero! I want to have fun, too."

The first two segments of a three-part Netflix series were released Tuesday.
