4 of 5 Macomb Officials Charged with Taking Bribes Had Filed for Bankruptcy

The old saying goes that money is the root of all evil, and in this case the lack of it likely got five former former Macomb County officials in trouble.

The five officials charged with taking bribes totaling at least $177,500 from trash hauling company, Rizzo Environmental Services, have a history of personal financial trouble, and four of them filed for bankruptcy, public records show, according to The Detroit News.

Additionally, two failed to pay taxes, one was investigated as part of a controversial sale of township trucks and another has multiple drunken driving offenses, The Detroit News found.

Former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, who led the charges against all five men, tells Nicquel Terry that money struggles, greed and opportunity can be the key motivators for elected officials who take bribes.
