Video of a brutal beating of a 23-year-old man in Greektown early Sunday morning has left a collective chill in the city. Even after he appeared to be knocked out, lying in the street, a video shows people kicking and punching Brandon Putnam in the head.

Now, his sister tells George Hunter of The Detroit News her brother was trying to break up a fight involving his cousin when a gang of young people started beating on him. The sister, who asked to remain anonymous, said her brother's brain is bleeding, and that he has a broken eye socket. His cousins were injured, but not as severely.

“He opened his eyes (Monday) and asked, ‘What happened to me?’” she says. Police are looking at video from Facebook and Greektown, hoping to arrest those involved.

The sister said her brother, who is a rapper, performed briefly at a Greektown hookah bar, accompanied by her and their two male cousins. After that, they were walking on Monroe toward the Casino.

“We never made it to the casino,” Putnam’s sister said. “My cousin said something, and one of those boys from another group thought he had said something wrong to him, so they jumped on him.

“Brandon was actually trying to stop it when they ran up on him,” his sister said. “There were about 15 of them.”

Several people are seen on the video laughing as the men are beaten.
