Detroit Judge Orders VW To Pay $2.8 Billion Criminal Fine

April 21, 2017, 12:35 PM

Volkswagen, which screwed consumers by cheating on emission tests for its cars, is paying for its criminal practices.

U.S. District Judge Sean Cox of Detroit on Friday sentenced the German automaker to three years probation and ordered it to pay a $2.8 billion criminal fine. That criminal fine is on top of $1.5 billion VW must pay in a civil case brought by government regulators. Additionally, VW is spending $11 billion to buy back cars and offer other compensation.

"This is a case of deliberate and massive fraud," Judge Cox said, according to a report in Reuters.

"This is a very serious and very troubling case involving an iconic automobile company," Cox added. "I just can't believe VW is in the situation it finds itself in today."
