Miguel Cabrera, who left in the middle of the game Friday night against the Minnesota Twins, will miss at least eight games with a strained groin.
Doctors are evaluating the results of an MRI, trying to determine the severity of the injury, reports Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.
John Hicks, a catcher and first baseman, is brought up from Toledo.
Cabrera joins Jose Iglesias and J.D. Martinez on the disabled list.
Iglesias was placed on the seven-day DL after an attempted double play in Tampa in which he was kneed in the jaw. Martinez is expected to return sometime next month.
