Groundbreaking for pricey new condos -- an activity more often seen in areas like Detroit's Midtown and downtown --  is set for next week in West Village on the city's east side.

The former St. Charles School at 1454 Townsend will be converted to 25 luxury condos called the St. Charles Residencies, reports Stephanie Shenouda of DBusiness.

The condos, with high ceilings and open layouts, will be 894 to 1,640 square feet each. Estimated prices are $275,000-$470,000, with actual prices coming soon.

Groundbreaking is May 1, with a one-year completion target.

“The St. Charles Residence is not going to be the typical conversion of a historic building into lofts,” Aamir Farooqi, chairman and CEO of Banyan Investments tells DBusiness
