A Detroit church tried to get guns off the street, but a gun-rights advocate group wasn't so crazy about the idea.

On Thursday, Detroit police at St. Cecilla Church on the city's west side bought 365 guns from citizens for $25 to to $200 a piece.

But the Detroit News reports there were some tense moments as guns rights folks, who opposed the effort, set up a competing program across the street in protest and bought guns.

Rick Ector of Legally Armed Detroit told the News that the buyback programs are "evil" and exploit poor, law-abiding gun owners.

"They do not work," Ector said. "They are potentially destroying evidence when they buy back the guns. They're also exploiting poor people."

Not everyone obviously agreed.

"We're trying to get guns off the street so the kids won't use them to kill each other,"  Alexander Thomas, a member of the church on Livernois near Grand River told the News.
