Tim Allen‘s ABC sitcom “Last Man Standing,” on the air since 2011, has been canceled -- much to the actor's chagrin. "Stunned and blindsided by the network I called home for the last six years," he tweets Tuesday.
The Friday night show has decent ratings, fueling speculation that it may be dropped because of Allen's conservative politics and a televised remark in March (video below) about being an oddity in liberal Hollywood, write Tony Maglio and Ryan Gajewski at The Wrap, an industry news site. They report:
Some may wonder if it’s Allen’s — a noted Republican — politics. Hollywood is a liberal playground, and Allen very publicly doesn’t roll that way. Or it could be because of one ill-received quip he made two months ago.
On a March episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Allen told Kimmel that being a Republican in Hollywood today is “like 1930s Germany. You gotta be real careful around here, you know. You’ll get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody believes.”
In his show, Allen plays a married father of three who "tries to maintain his manliness in a world increasingly dominated by women," a network description says.
The 63-year-old actor grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Seaholm High School. He attended Central Michigan University before transferring to Western University in Kalamazoo.
His Twitter page says:
Santa? Buzz Lightyear? The Tool Man? Mike Baxter? Hey, I’m still that wisecracking kid from the Midwest, looking for answers to life’s big questions.
