Curious about the community of tiny homes on Detroit's west side in the Dexter-Linwood area off the  Lodge Freeway being built by Cass Community Social Services?

People can tour the six new rental cottages, each with just 250 to 400 square feet, on Friday and Saturday. The cost is $75 for one person and $100 for two.

The tour includes a six-course meal -- served in the different homes -- created by chef Matt Prentice and the Cass Catering team. Hour-long tours start at 1564 Elmhurst every 10 minutes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Proceeds go toward building more homes. (More details are here.)

The goal is housing low-income residents, including formerly homeless people, senior citizens and students. Tenants will have access to Cass's services including food, health care and financial literacy.

Twenty-five mini-houses are planned. Rent is $1 a square foot. Residents are expected to move into the six recently finished homes in June. If they stay seven years, they can own the houses.

The project is privately funded, with the Ford Motor Company Fund donating $400,000. The entire project is estimated to cost $1.5 million.

“Every home is different – there are cottages, a Colonial, a Victorian, a Tutor and an environmental house – each has a distinctive feature so the residents will have a sense of pride in their home,” Cass Executive Director Faith Fowler says in a statement.
