June 15, 2017, 4:53 PM

The former WJBK-TV studios building at 7441 Second Ave. in Detroit's New Center area could undergo a major transformation.

A Canadian real estate company presented a proposal to the Detroit Historical Commission to build about 150 residential units and storefronts, reports Kirk Pinho of Crain's Detroit Business. The Detroit Historical Commission is considering the plan, presented Wednesday night by Halcor Group of Calgary, Alberta..

The vacant two-story building, built in 1956 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, would gain additional floors.

WJBK operated there from 1956 until 1971, when it moved to Nine Mile Road in Southfield. The studios were bought by WTVS, Detroit' public TV station, which moved to Wixom in 2009 and sold the site to Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit. Halcor purchased it in 2014, according to Wikipedia.
