Home tax foreclosures have long been an awful, painful reality in Detroit.
Over 100,000 Detroit working families lost their homes from 2009-2015 due to foreclosures caused by the city of Detroit assessing properties at rates that violate the Michigan Constitution, according to the Coalition to End Unconstitutional Tax Foreclosures.
"Take tha House Back," a video that won the Best Hip Video at the American Music Video Festival in Charlotte, N.C. over the weekend, explores the devastating impact of tax foreclosures in Detroit and the need to fight back.
The 3 minute, 25 second video is directed by Kate Levy and Will See and produced by Bryce Detroit for Detroit Recordings. The song is written by See, who stars in the video. The voice of Detroit civil rights icon Maureen Taylor can also be heard on the video
The video also touches on homes that go into foreclosure, only to he bought by new Detroiters through the Detroit Land Bank Authority.
