Times changed for Alexis Wiley when she left Fox 2 to join the Duggan administration. She essentially went from pointing out the wrongs to being responsible for them.

"I feel like I’m responsible for everything around me," she tells Slate. "I remember when I first got into this, I’d be driving down the street and see a light that’s out. And I’m like, ‘Gosh, that light’s out, somebody's gotta fix that.' And then I’m like, 'Wait, wait. That somebody’s me! I'm the one who has to make the call for that.'"

Slate, the incisive daily online magazine covering politics and culture, has a podcast called "Working," hosted by Jacob Brogan, who talks with Americans from all walks of life about their jobs.

This time around his focus is on Wiley, the Mayor Mike Duggan's chief of staff.

The TV journalist came to the mayor's office as a spokeswoman in 2014, and in a few months was promoted to the de facto second-in-command of the city.

Wiley describes her role as "making sure that our external statements fit our internal actions," as Duggan told her at the start.

Wiley focuses in the episode on projects aimed at revitalizing Detroit, and discusses the change she’s seen across the city, even in her short time at the position.
