Detroit Police Chief James Craig announces Ulysha Renee Hall's job in Dallas.

Detroit Deputy Police Chief Ulysha Renee Hall is heading south to become Dallas' first female police chief in the department's 136 year history.

Hall was named the chief on Wednesday, the Dallas Morning News reports. Her first day on the job will be Sept. 5.

"The Dallas Police Department — that's about to be my family," Hall said at a news conference in Detroit. "We are a family in blue already, but as their new leader, we're going to be just like family."

Hall was one of seven finalists, three of them internal candidates, the paper reported. Hall is the daughter of a murdered Detroit police officer.
