J.D. Martinez as a Diamondback

If Arizona Diamondback fans were expecting some magic on Wednesday night, it was not to be.

J.D. Martinez, who was traded from the Tigers to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, suited up for Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds.

He struck out twice, was hit by a pitch in the hand.and was removed from the game, reports SB Nation, which writes:

Suffice to say, this is not the development that Arizona fans (or their front office) were looking for in the first game for their hyped new hitter. Before the trade, Martinez was hitting .305 for the Tigers with 16 home runs.

The Diamondbacks said Martinez suffered a left hand contusion, and that X-rays are negative for anything worse, the site reports. He is currently day-to-day.

Martinez was hit in the hand during his second strike out. Under the rules, since the ball hit only his hand during the swing, the at-bat resulted in a strikeout.

“It’s definitely scary,” Martinez said, according to a report in the Arizona Republic. “Had to say a prayer there for a second when we went to the X-ray machine. But luckily everything’s good. So just got to take it day-by-day. Obviously, it’s swollen right now, so we’ll just see how it feels tomorrow and go from there.”

The Diamondbacks lost to the Reds 4-3.
