Personal drones have become increasingly popular, but they're not always being used for the good of society.

Three Metro Detroiters are arrested for flying a drone to drop drugs and a phone near a housing unit at an Ionia prison, Michael Gerstein of The Detroit News reports.

It's the first Michigan arrests in such an incident.

The three people, not yet identified, used a drone to drop a package containing drugs and a cellphone near a housing unit at the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia just before 4 a.m., according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Guards saw the drone fly back and drop another package in the same area. Prison staff notified local law enforcement, who arrested the trio Thursday.
