On a sunny, perfect Friday, Summer In the City,  a community service organization in Detroit largely comprised of young volunteers, celebrated its Sweet 16 anniversary and the end of the 2017 season with a festive community party at the Joseph Walker-Williams Center on Rosa Parks Boulevard.

More than 1,000 children, parents and volunteers gathered for the morning and afternoon festivities that included a moon bounce, water slide, face painting, petting zoo and a barbecue.

Since its inception in 2002, thousands of volunteers have performed hundreds of thousands of hours of community service that includes painting murals, planting community gardens and playing with elementary school campers at enrichment sites throughout the city. The program runs from June through August.

What's a kid party without face painting?

The party included a petting zoo.
