Northland, once one of America's grandest malls, is gone. Southfield would welcome a second act for the property, and no ordinary second act at that.

The city submitted a bid proposing that the old Northland site become the home to Amazon's second headquarters.

The move comes as Detroit and Windsor work together to lure the online shopping giant. Amazon is looking for a second home in North America and cities all around the country, from California to New York, have expressed interest. Amazon estimates it will make a $5 billion investment in the project and create up to 50,000 jobs with average salaries of $100,000 a year.

Southfield's proposal calls for the use of Northland’s former Macy’s building — just under 500,000 square feet — along with 125 acres of city-owned land, The Detroit News reports.

"The vision for the master plan shows it would be great for loft-style" open spaces or offices, Michael Manion, community relations director for the city of Southfield, tells the paper. "The third and fourth floors could even be used for parking."
