I was always a fan of rocker Tom Petty.
But I became a bigger one in the mid-1990s when I was on strike at The Detroit News and we often played his song "I Won't Back Down" at striker rallies.
Petty, who blended California rock with a deep Southern heritage, died Monday after suffering cardiac arrest at age 66. He lived in Los Angles.
This past July, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played at DTE Energy Music Theatre as part of a 40th Anniversary tour. Below is a video from the performance and a video of "I Won't Back Down."
