Budget constraints back in 1981, in the midst of a brutal recession, forced the Detroit Public Library to close its main branch on Sundays.

This past Sunday, for the first time in 36 years, the doors swung back open and folks of all ages filled the halls with life and joy. It's being billed as "Sunday Family Fundays," and will include special events and speakers.

From October to May, the  the Main branch at 5201 Woodward Avenue, across from the Detroit Institute of Arts, will be open on Sundays from 1-5 p.m.

Additionally, for the first time ever, two branches, Redford Branch on Grand River and McNichols and the Luara Ingalls Wilder Branch on Seven Mile Road at Van Dyke, will open Sundays until May.
