Now that the Red Wings have moved into their new venue, there are plans to soon demolish the Joe Louis Arena.

After that, there are visions of building a high rise apartments, a restaurant and other retail, Nicquel Terry of The Detroit News reports

Maurice Cox, director of planning for Detroit, envisions a more walkable area, a destination for visitors and an attractive place to live.

"There is no question that you can accommodate residential, retail and commercial all mixed together," Cox says. "We have a chance to make a very vibrant place that has its own kind of unique identity."

After the building is razed, the city -- which owns the property -- will hand it over to bond insurer Financial Guaranty Insurance Co. as part of the municipal bankruptcy deal the city made to pay off debt.
