Man killed while retrieving bike from bike rack.

Since 2015, taxpayers have paid nearly $17 million in settlements as a result of Detroit Department of Transportation bus accidents, some which resulted in  death, Ross Jones of WXYZ reports. Some victims have been left with disabilities.

In one instance, on April 4, 2015, passenger Joey Davis was killed.

He had boarded a DDOT bus with his bicycle and was waiting to get out at a stop near 8 Mile and Van Dyke, Jones reports.

After stepping off the bus, Davis retrieved his bicycle from the bike rack at the front of the bus. While he's doing it, the veteran bus driver looks up at her rear-view mirror, then proceeds to drive off and runs him over.

“It wasn’t simply an accident,” attorney Gary Felty, who represented Davis’s family, tells WXYZ. “There was negligence.”

Davis died at the hospital and the city settled the case for $4.5 million.  The driver was re-trained and still works for DDOT.
