Some awards are best forgotten.

Orkin, the national pest control company, releases its "Top 50 Rattiest Cities," and Detroit is ranked #7, up from #9 the year before.

Chicago is ranked #1 followed by New York and Los Angeles.

Orkin notes in a press release that it ranks metro regions by the number of rodent treatments it performed from Sept. 15, 2016 to that date this year. The ranking includes residential and commercial treatments.

"Rats and mice begin looking for warmer, more insulated places to get through the winter, and these too often happen to be our homes or businesses," John Kane, entomologist and Technical Director of Orkin’s Midwest Region, says in a statement. “Rodents like to chew on wood and electrical wires, increasing the fire danger behind your walls and potentially damage to your home."

"Rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter, while mice can fit through a hole the size of a dime," Kane said. "Even if they can’t find an opening, they can often chew their way in."
