A worker for Detroit-based Shinola, who was featured in different publications as a model employee, was charged Thursday in federal court with stealing hundreds of timepieces and selling them on the black market, Robert Snell of The Detroit News reports.

Judith Walker was charged in federal court with wire fraud because she sent a text message while negotiating the sale of a stolen Shinola watch, authorities say.

Authorities allege that Walker stole from 2015 up until January.

The employee was once considered a model employee who was featured in media coverage about the company’s Detroit operations and efforts to hire residents.

In 2013, The Verge reported:

"There’s no watch company in Detroit," said Judith Walker a year ago when she was offered an interview with the company. "I’ve lived in Detroit my whole life and I’ve never seen one," she told the recruiter. Tired of an hour-long commute, she’d just left her job in quality control at the General Motors plant in Lake Orion, MI; her husband and son both work in the automotive industry. Despite her skepticism, she agreed to an interview.

That same year, Crain's Detroit Business wrote:

Judy Walker, who was a cosmetologist for 12 years in Detroit before joining Shinola as a movement assembler. "You have to be focused, serious and sincerely enjoy your job to succeed at Shinola," said Walker, 36.
