Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey barely squeaked by Tuesday night to defeat a formidable opponent, Garlin Gilchrist.
There was enough criticism about how Winfrey has done the job that many gave Gilchrist a good chance of unseating the incumbent, who first elected in 2005.
With all precincts reporting, Winfrey garnered 49,882 votes (50.5 percent), compared to Gilchrist's 48,400 (49 percent), for a difference of 1,482 votes.
Meanwhile, Detroit City Council incumbents, Brenda Jones, James Tate, Mary Sheffield and Raquel Castañeda-López kept their jobs.
Retired Detroit police officer Roy McCalister won with 60 percent of the vote, defeating former state Sen. Virgil Smith.
